IMPHAL, Mar 11: Reacting to titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba’s claim that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave away Kabaw Valley to Myanmar (then Burma) on March 3, 1953, MPCC chief spokesman Hareshwar Goswami has rejected the same claim as misleading and baseless.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhavan, BT Road here today, Hareshwar Goswami challenged Leishemba Sanajaoba to an open debate on the Kabaw Valley.
He said that Jawaharlal Nehru did not come to Manipur on March 3, 1953.
Hareshwar Goswami said that it was king Marjit Singh (1813-1819) who gave away Kabaw Valley to Myanmar, not Jawaharlal Nehru.
In his book ‘Eastern Frontier of India’, RB Pemberton wrote that Marjit Singh went to Burma and offered Kabaw Valley to the Burmese king in exchange for his help to Marjit in ascending the throne and recognising Marjit as the king of Manipur, Hareshwar said.
The MPCC spokesman contended that the Treaty of Yandaboo mentioned nothing about payment of compensation for Kabaw Valley.
As such, there is no question of violating the Treaty of Yandaboo when Kabaw Valley was purportedly given away to Myanmar, he said.
There is a saying that Maharaj Gambhir Singh died of heart attack on learning that Kabaw Valley had been gifted away to Myanmar without any agreement, he said.
On learning that the people of Manipur and the princes were deeply hurt by the gifting away of Kabaw valley to Myanmar, an agreement on payment of compensation regarding Kabaw Valley was signed on January 25, 1834.
The agreement laid down that the British supreme Government would pay a monthly stipend of 500 Sicca to the Manipuri king as compensation for Kabaw Valley. It is not clear whether Burma was aware of this agreement or not, Hareshwar Goswami said.
There is no instance of Burma paying any compensation to Manipur for Kabaw Valley and this is documented well in the National Archives of India, he claimed.
He added that Kabaw Valley was not a part of Manipur when Manipur was merged into the Indian Union in 1949.
