IMPHAL, Mar 25 : A rare and complicated tongue cancer surgery has been successfully performed on a 50-year-old man at Little Clinic, Nagaram, Imphal today.
Little Clinic is a partner of Karkinos Healthcare located at JNIMS.
The man was suffering from a locally advanced, complicated tongue carcinoma that had affected 70 percent of the tongue including the base of the organ.
Renowned head and neck surgeon and Karkinos Medical Director, Dr Moni Abraham Kuriakose led the operation and was assisted by doctors of Karkinos Healthcare and Little Clinic.
The complicated operation lasted around 8 hours, and it involved several surgeries, which included subtotal glossectomy with compartmental reduction surgery, bilateral neck dissection for removal of affected (cancer) tissues, and pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) surgery--a reconstruction surgery.
The subtotal glossectomy with compartmental reduction surgery involved removing more than half (but less than the entire) tongue, along with the compartments (anatomical- functional units) containing the tumour and potential pathways for spread.
A bilateral neck dissection was then performed on the patient where lymph nodes were removed from both sides of the neck to control cancer spread.
Then, a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap (PMMF) surgery was performed to reconstruct the neck using tissues from the chest (pectoralis major muscle).
After the successful completion of the surgery, the patient is being kept under observation, said officials of the Little Clinic.
The case was rare and complicated. The success of the surgery marks a significant advancement in cancer treatment, said the officials.
A partner of Karkinos Healthcare, Little Clinic has successfully performed over 120 cancer surgeries.
