IMPHAL, Mar 7 : Tiddim Road Athletic Union (TRAU) overcame Sports Academy Tirur (SAT) FC, Tirur (Kerala) by 2-1 goals in an I-League 2 encounter at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium courtesy of S Johny Kom's first half brace.
It was TRAU's second home win in the third tier club tournament of the country after having beaten United Sports Club, Kolkata on February 26.
The two sides had their fair share of chances as TRAU dominated the first half before SAT FC's spirited comeback attempt in the second half but it were TRAU who held their nerves to seal all three points at the end.
TRAU were into action from the word go and kept teasing the SAT FC defence until Johny Kom connected a neat cross from compatriot Moirangthem Nelson around the box and cut his way into the box to stun the SAT FC custodian Mohanraj with a low right footer.
TRAU kept pressing following the morale boosting lead and Johny Kom was at it again as he flicked home a shot from his compatriot Thounaojam Rohit to double the advantage for TRAU after 34 minutes. It was Kabrambam Arunkumar who sprinted towards the left flank before turning himself back from inside the box to feed the ball to onrushing Thounaojam Rohit who managed to take a shot. The shot lacked intensity as Rohit was obstructed but it went straight to Johny Kom, who found himself luckily onside and made no mistake in sending home the ball to give TRAU a 2-0 first half lead.
SAT FC however owned the second half making frantic efforts to reduce the margin with Rahul Venu renewing the charge against the home side who also kept threatening whenever they had the chance. Their efforts paid off late in the 83rd minute when Rahul Venu sent in a fine cross into the box and Lijo K headed home from a close range.
The late stage also witnessed promising attacks from both the ends but defenders stood tall to deny any change in the scoreline.
Md Abujar who produced many stunning saves to deny the visitors' comeback was adjudged player of the match.
TRAU will host FC Bengaluru United next on March 12 at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium.
The match starts at 2.30 pm.
