Ukhrul, Apr 10 : Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing has taken a strong stance against contractors who fail to follow guidelines while implementing projects in Kamjong, vowing to penalize them according to the law.
Speaking to the media while inspecting developmental projects being taken up in the district headquarters, Kamjong, the MLA expressed frustration over the slow progress of the Sadbhavana Mandap, a women's market complex in Kamjong, which began construction in 2021.
Despite significant investment, the project remains incomplete with subpar work quality, he said.
Leishiyo further stated that the tender for the Sadbhavana Mandap construction was awarded as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), but the contractor failed to complete the work even after five years, showing no progress.
Saying that the PWD office has again awarded the tender for rigid pavement work below 32 per cent bidding rate to the same contractor, he asked what can people expect from such an errant contractor.
He said that projects in Kamjong district are not meant for lining the pockets of unscrupulous contractors.
Later, the MLA, along with village headman Hoping Chithung and others, inspected a road project and an under-construction district hospital in Kamjong.
He criticized the poor work quality, particularly the substandard blacktop work and narrow road construction.
Leishiyo warned that those responsible would face severe penalties, including possible jail time, for cheating and misusing development funds.
Village headman Hoping Chithung also expressed strong resentment, questioning whether contractors or the Government are to blame for the lack of progress in Kamjong district headquarters' projects.
None of the projects in Kamjong have been commissioned to date, Hoping said, urging the relevant authorities to look into the matter and  take up necessary actions.
