IMPHAL, Apr 23 : The All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO) and Thangmeiband United Club (TUC) jointly observed the "1891gi Manipurgi Ningtam Lan Ningshing Numit", a remembrance day commemorating the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War, at the Memorial of Patriots at Cheiraoching, Thangmei-band today.
AMUCO, in a statement, said that the gathering paid respects to the patriots by offering floral tributes and Thang-ta salutes during the observance.
The observance began with a sword and spear dance performance and rituals by members of Apunba Manipur Huyel Lanlong Lup, Wangkhei Thangjam Leikai, following which members of AMUCO and TUC offered floral tributes to the busts of the patriots.
At the function, AMUCO president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang appealed to the people to carry forward the legacy of 'our ancestors' who fought to keep Manipur intact.
Saying that Manipuris have never surrendered to an enemy throughout 'our history' spanning thousands of years and all challenges to Manipuris and Meiteis have been responded to in an appropriate manner, he added that the Meiteis and the Burmese (Awas) have clashed in various wars, but the Meiteis never surrendered, even when they lost some of the conflicts.
On the crisis in Manipur, Nando Luwang said that the scheme of the Kuki-Zo people to disintegrate Manipur will never succeed.
Claiming that the violent campaign of the Kuki-Zo people primarily serves to enrich some of their leaders at the expense of their own people's suffering, he asserted that it is time for the Kuki-Zo people to hold their terrorist groups accountable.
He further stated that the demand for Separate Administration or Union Territory will never be fulfilled.
Leaders of other organisations such as Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur, All Manipur Women's Voluntary Association, All Manipur Ethnical Socio Cultural Organisation, Manipuri Student's Federation, Committee on Human Rights and All Manipur Meitei Pangal Clubs' Organisation also took part in the observance among others.
