IMPHAL, Jul 14 : Marking a significant advancement in forensic investigation, the third Government Virtopsy Centre in India was inaugurated at RIMS, Imphal along with a 40-body Cold Storage Facility today.
Virtopsy (virtual autopsy) technology enables non-invasive, digitally preserved and accurate post-mortems in cases such as road traffic accidents and bullet injuries, while also supporting research and ensuring legal admissibility.
The inauguration ceremony was organised by the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, RIMS, Imphal and held at a new building of the Department housing the Virtopsy Centre and the Cold Storage Facility.
The facilities were officially inaugurated by Professor G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, Imphal, in the presence of Professor N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital and Professor Th Meera Devi, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology.
Speaking on the occasion, the RIMS Director said that in conventional autopsy, the body is dissected to determine the cause of death while in virtopsy, CT and MRI scans are used to work out the cause and manner of death without cutting the body open.
With the permission of the Court concerned, virtopsy can be used instead of conventional autopsy, he said.
In European countries, virtopsy was introduced 30/40 years ago. But RIMS, Imphal is the third Government hospital in India to house a Virtopsy Centre equipped with a 32-slice CT scanner. The other two are at AIIMS, New Delhi and NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, said Professor G Sunil Kumar.
Despite its availability, virtopsy has not replaced traditional autopsy. It serves as a supplementary technology. But it may replace normal autopsy in the future, pointed out the RIMS Director.
On another note, he said that the old cold storage room had the capacity to store only six bodies.
Other dignitaries present at the event include Ksh Shivakanta Singh, IPS, Superintendent of Police, Imphal West, Deputy Director (Admn), Dean (Academics), Principals of the College of Nursing and Dental College, heads of departments, nursing officers, faculty members, and staff of RIMS, Imphal.
