IMPHAL, Jul 14: The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union (MMTU) has endorsed the call made by Thadou Inpi Manipur (TIM) and several other organisations to remove Any Kuki Tribes (AKT) from the Scheduled Tribes’ list of Manipur.
The MMTU has also expressed support to the decisions and positions taken by TIM on identification of illegal immigrants, implementation of NRC, prevention of illegal immigration and scrapping of the Free Movement Regime (FMR).
Historical records say that Khongsai or Kuki tribe came to Manipur from 1786 during the reign of king Bhagyachandra and they were settled in some hill areas of Manipur by king Nara Singh during 1845-47.
With due approval of the Manipur king, Khongsais started their settlement at Wairi, Thamnong, Sanahal Lokchao and Takhen Chirang etc.
Some of the Khongsais also served in the Manipur army. There are also records of king Chandrakirti rescuing 649 Khongsais during the Lushai Expedition in 1872, the MMTU said in a statement.
With the immigrant population growing at an alarming rate and the immigrants waging a sustained aggression to dismember Manipur, the Meiteis and other indigenous communities are now facing several challenges, it said.
Meiteis have been already facing huge political, socio-economic and territorial challenges.
Even though Meitei was recognised as a tribal group by the British in 1891, the community was left out of the ST list notified by the Government of India in 1951.
Meitei was listed first in the names of primitive tribes of Assam published in 1921. The same list also included Khongsai.
Meitei occupied the same number one position when 14 tribes were shortlisted in 1931, it said.
The MMTU asserted that the clamour for enlisting Meitei in the ST categorically under Article 342(1) is basically about restoration of its earlier status.
It then categorically stated that no other community or ethnic group has any right to oppose inclusion of Meiteis in the ST list. This is a birthright of the Meitei.
No community should commit the offence of desecrating the holy places and sacred sites of the Meitei community, it said.
All the illegal immigrants living in Manipur must be deported to their places of origin as per the base year fixed by the Government and everyone ought to accept it, the MMTU said.
