IMPHAL, Jul 15 : The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), General Headquarters, conducted an inspection of the Tribal Market at New Checkon, Imphal East on July 15, 2025.
As per a release issued by TYCM, the market serves as an important business hub in Imphal where tribal vendors and farmers from various tribal communities of Manipur engage in daily trade, contributing to their economic sustenance.
During the inspection, TYCM observed that the market infrastructure is in a dilapidated condition. The market premises suffered from significant wear and tear, including a stagnant and ineffective drainage system, posing serious inconveniences to vendors and visitors alike.
In this regard, the TYCM earnestly appealed to the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Government of Manipur, for the immediate renovation and proper maintenance of the Tribal Market at New Checkon.
The TYCM appealed to all civil society organizations (CSOs) and individuals to refrain from causing any interruption or disturbance in the management of the Tribal Market.
The TYCM reiterated that the Tribal Market at New Checkon, is inclusive and meant for all tribal communities, and not for any single tribal community.
Furthermore, the TYCM assured that it will continue to monitor and oversee the smooth and effective functioning of the Tribal Market for the welfare of all tribal vendors and stakeholders involved.
Meanwhile, the TYCM, General Headquarters, has submitted a representation to the Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur urging for consideration of Senapati district (rural hill area/district) as a site for establishing a Model Rural Health Research Unit (MRHRU) under ICMR-Funded Department of Health Research (DHR), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
“The Government of India has sanctioned one MRHRU for Manipur, to be established in a rural area or district under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. Accordingly, the Government of Manipur has proposed two sites: Senapati District and Kakching District”, said TYCM in the memorandum.
The TYCM pointed out that on July 3, a team from ICMR-RMRCNE, along with officials from the Health Services, Manipur, visited and surveyed both proposed sites- Senapati district and Kakching district for site selection.
Highlighting the guidelines & objectives of the MRHRU project/ scheme, the TYCM mentioned that the valley districts of Manipur have comparatively sufficient medical facilities, with both Government and private hospitals well established.
However, in the rural hill areas or districts of Manipur, there are no adequate, large, or properly equipped hospitals, whether government or private, it added.
The TYCM asserted that in view of the disparity and the need to ensure equitable healthcare access for all sections of society, particularly the underserved tribal communities in the hill areas, it is essential to prioritize the establishment of healthcare facilities in these regions.
“Why should the government focus on establishing medical facilities in places/ districts where sufficient Government and private hospitals already exist, instead of prioritizing hill rural areas where medical facilities are inadequate or lacking?”, concluded TYCM.
