IMPHAL, Jul 15 : Several structures erected unlawfully on the banks of the Iril River at Urup, Imphal East, were dismantled using excavators today.
The eviction drive, carried out under the supervision of the Imphal East district administration, was attended by SDC Keirao Bitra Arambam Geetanjali, a team of police led by the Officer-in-Charge of Irilbung Police Station, Central forces, and officials of the Water Resources Department. It may be mentioned that Imphal East Deputy Commissioner Dr Nivedita Lairenlakpam had, on June 23, issued an order to remove all structures erected on encroached riverbanks in the district within seven days .
Speaking to the media on the sidelines, SDC Keirao Bitra Geetanjali said that the district administration will take appropriate action as per the law of the land if the dismantled illegal structures are reconstructed again.
Seeking cooperation from the people in the drive, she said that the district administration will inspect the sites where illegal structures have been dismantled.
She also said that they had a meeting with local clubs and women's organizations to prevent encroachment on riverbanks and mitigate flood risks a few days back, adding that these groups extended their help during today's drive.
Saying that encroachment on riverbanks disturbs the flow of river water, she added that the eviction drive will continue in different places across Imphal East.
