IMPHAL, Jul 16 : Vice Chancellor of Dhanamanjuri University Prof Professor W Chandbabu has warned that Loktak Lake may disappear in the next 50 years if the pollution and degradation of the lake continue.
He made that statement during a scientific discussion held under the theme "Reviving Loktak : A Discourse on Conservation and Sustainable  Management of Loktak Lake" at the PG Block of DM University.
Opening the programme organised by the Department of Environmental Sciences of DM University, Chandbabu said that the condition of Loktak Lake, which is closely associated with the history and culture of Manipur, is worsening day by day both environmentally and ecologically.
Whether Loktak Lake will survive another 50 years if the pollution and degradation of the lake continue has become a pertinent question, he said and added that DM University organized the programme to help formulate strategies for the conservation of the freshwater lake.
He emphasised that a collective effort from policy makers, scientists, CSOs, academicians and the people is required to revive Loktak Lake and its ecosystem to its former glory.
Head Professor of  Environmental Sciences (DMU) Koijam KK Mani Bhushan stated that encroachment is one of the biggest factors contributing to the shrinkage of Loktak Lake. Saying that the Loktak Hydro Electric Project also has a negative impact on the lake, he added that people should recognize the significance of Loktak Lake to Manipur society and work towards conserving it.
The discussion programme was moderated by IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy member Salam Rajesh.
