First Nupilan (1904) Gallery inaugurated

IMPHAL, Jul 17 : Manipur University Vice Chancellor Professor Naorem Lokendra inaugurated the First Nupilan (1904) Gallery, photographic archive expansion of Anglo-Manipur War 1891 and installation of archaeological fossils at Manipur University Central Museum today.
Speaking as the chief guest at the event, the VC said that the gallery inaugurated today will prove to be beneficial to research scholars and social scientists immersed in the study of Manipur history.
The first Nupilan movement of 1904 is one of the most significant chapters of Manipuri modern history.
Stressing its limited mention except in a few historical books, he maintained that detailed accounts of the women who took the leadership role in this movement are sorely lacking.
The First Nupilan Gallery will provide valuable information about the movement and its origin, he added.
Saying that a museology (study and practice of museum organization and management) course has been introduced in MU, he lauded the Central Museum's efforts in curating such historically crucial items.
Other notable dignitaries present at the event include Professor O Ranjit Singh, Head, Department of Ancient History and Archaeology, MU; Professor Chungmeijai Mathew MK, Head, Department of History, MU; Rajkumar Meghajit Singh, advisor, Ningthemcha Ningshing Lup; Thokchom Jogendrajit, Assistant Director (News), AIR, Imphal and Professor Memcha Loitongbam, Dean, School of Social Sciences, MU as presidium members. As a part of the event, simple gifts were presented to the families of the courageous women who participated in the 1904 Women's War as a mark of honour.
The gathering also observed a 2-minute silence to pay tribute to the women.
