IMPHAL, Jul 17 : The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate today remanded 28-year-old Shakina @ Apikcha, a habitual offender and alleged jewel thief, to judicial custody till July 31.
According to the case details, Shakina, daughter of Md Nejamuddin of Paobitek Mayai Leikai, was arrested on July 16 morning from her residence by a team of Imphal Police Station.
She was produced before the Court by a team of Imphal police station with a prayer to send her to judicial custody.
The Investigating Officer (IO) of the case stated that on July 16 night, the shopkeeper of a jewellery shop at Wahengbam Leikai filed a complaint with the OC of Imphal Police Station.
According to the complaint, at around 3 pm on the same day, an unknown woman (the accused) visited the shop, claiming to buy a gold ring and gold necklace, and requested the shopkeeper to display all the trays of gold rings for selection.
The shopkeeper displayed all the gold rings on the tray for the woman to choose from. After examining each ring to determine her size and preferred design, the accused selected one ring and asked the shopkeeper to calculate its price.
While the complainant was busy calculating the price of the selected ring, the accused cleverly hid another ring in her left hand and discreetly slipped it into her bag. After the complainant quoted the price of the selected ring at Rs 21,000. The accused asked for a GPay number to the shopkeeper claiming she would ask her friend to make the payment, said the IO.
The accused clicked on the GPay QR code and left the shop without further word. Suspicious of her behaviour, the complainant recounted the rings and found one ring worth Rs 40,000 missing.
During the investigation, a joint team of Imphal police Station and Wangoi police Station conducted a search at the accused's residence at Paobitek Mayai Leikai. She was detained and brought to Imphal Police Station due to her suspicious behaviour. After verification, the accused admitted to stealing the gold ring, and the stolen item was seized from her possession.
The IO also said that Shakina is a habitual offender involved in various prejudicial activities and was earlier arrested in 2022 under the ND&PS Act.
The Court, after hearing the IO's submission and perusing the case records, remanded Shakina to judicial custody till July 31 to facilitate smooth investigation.
