AI Appreciation Day observed

IMPHAL, Jul 17: While appreciating the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence, the importance of human values and agency was underscored at the observation of AI Appreciation Day 2025 held yesterday at the Seminar Hall of the Department of Computer Science, Manipur University.
The Department organised the programme under the theme "Artificial Intelligence and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation" according to a press release.
The event was graced by Professor Sumitra Phanjoubam, Dean, School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, MU, as the chief guest; Professor A Rajmani Singha, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), MU as the guest of honour and Dr Khumukcham Robindro Singh, Head, Department of Computer Science, MU as the president of the function.
On the occasion, Professor Sumitra Phanjoubam emphasized the need to balance AI advancement with the preservation of human values and intelligence. She highlighted the importance of fostering an educational ecosystem where AI supports human learning, automation respects human agency, and the true spirit of learning remains grounded in curiosity, compassion, and consciousness.
Professor A Rajmani Singha said that despite celebrating advancements in AI, the true purpose of education must remain in cultivating wisdom, nurturing curiosity, and shaping human character.
"It is through these values that AI can be guided to serve and uplift humanity", he noted.
In his presidential address, Dr Khumukcham Robindro Singh emphasized the importance of retaining human values in learning.
AI should serve as a tool to assist teachers and empower students, but the core purpose of education - nurturing creativity, critical thinking, and human connection - should always remain central, he said.
The function was attended by faculty members from various departments of MU, staff members, research scholars, and students of the department.
