IMPHAL, Jul 18 : Principal Secretary (Agriculture) Arun Kumar Sinha has asserted that strict measures have been taken up to ensure that counterfeit and substandard fertilizers are not issued to farmers in Manipur in compliance with the recent instruction from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Arun Kumar Sinha said that as per the directive given by Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan on July 13, the Principal Secretary (Agriculture) has instructed offi- cials of the Department of Agriculture to avoid distributing sub-standard fertilizers.
Additional instructions have been issued to take strict action against individuals who procure the Government fertilizer for the purpose of reselling them secretly and those who get the urea from alternative sources with the goal of selling them to farmers. So far, no sub-standard or counterfeit fertilizers have been detected in Manipur as all of them have been sourced from Government approved fertilizer suppliers from Assam, he informed.
On another note, the Agriculture Department has conducted a campaign wherein more than 96,000 bags of fertilizers were distributed to farmers.
The campaign resumed yesterday as 45 regions were identified for fertilizer distribution across 5 valley districts.
Currently, the Department has 40,000 fertilizer bags in stock. More than 1 lakh bags will be brought into Manipur soon and all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that farmers do not face shortage of fertilizers, he said.
