IMPHAL, Jul 18 : The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has firmly stated that the proposed delimitation exercise in Manipur should not be conducted under any circumstances using the 2001 and 2011 Population Census reports, which it claims are erroneous.
In this connection, the Union has submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla today.
Speaking to the media at Manipur Press Club, MMTU secretary Mutum Churamani said that both the Centre and the State Governments already know the Census reports of 2001 and 2011 are unreliable.
Stating that a new Census exercise is set to begin in April 2026, he added that the subsequent delimitation should be conducted only after identifying the illegal immigrants settling in the State.
He demanded that the issues of illegal immigrants should be addressed first before the commencement of the Census exercise.
Continuing that Manipur is facing a demographic imbalance with the indigenous communities living like refugees in their own State, Churamani said that the State witnessed an abnormal population growth of about 40 per cent in seven Sub-Divisions during the 1991-2001 Census.
Given the abnormal population growth, many people are demanding that the Census be conducted with 1951 as the base year, he said.
Churamani, meanwhile, stated that the Union will start a campaign under the banner “Inclusion of Meetei/Meitei in Scheduled Tribe List And Demand For Deportation Of Illegal Immigrants” as part of its campaign soon.
