UKNA's objection aborts Kuki-Zo meet

IMPHAL, Jul 19: Following strong objection from the UKNA, an armed group which is not a signatory of the SoO agreement, the Chin-Kuki-Zo consultative meet- ing scheduled today at Chu-rachandpur Peace Ground has been cancelled.
A large number of Chin-Kuki-Zo people took part in the Tribal Solidarity Rally organised by ATSUM on May 3, 2023 at Churachand-pur and many individuals armed with sophisticated weapons were present in the midst of the protesters.
In the name of the Tribal Solidarity Rally, the Chin-Kuki-Zo people launched a surprise violent aggression against unsuspecting Meitei villagers, torched their hou- ses and drove them away from their homes.
The violence soon spread to other parts of the State and the whole State was plunged into a prolonged violent crisis. Since then, a restive situation has been besieging the State.
The abortive consultative meeting was convened to take a collective decision of the Chin-Kuki-Zo people on the prolonged restive situation.
But the consultative mee-ting was aborted after UKNA, a new armed group which is not a signatory of SoO agreement raised a strong objection against the meeting, sources said.
On the other hand, Kuki-Zo armed groups under SoO agreement have been talking regularly with the Ministry of Home Affairs on renewal of SoO agreement, relocation of designated camps and opening of National Highways to all sections of people.
Moreover, MHA and the SoO groups have already reached an understanding on installation of a popular Government in the State.
UKNA has been contending that holding such a consultative meeting under the prevailing situation is ill-timed and smacks of enemy strategy .
However, organizers of the consultative meeting were claiming that the consultative meeting was aimed at adopting a collective decision after listening to all the voices of the Kuki-Zo people. But the consultative meeting was aborted on account of differences among Kuki-Zo armed groups, said the sources.
