IMPHAL, Jul 19 : The Nongpok Imphal Loumi Sinmi Apunba Lup (NILSAL) has urged the Agriculture department and other relevant authorities to test the nitrogen content in the urea fertilizers being distributed to farmers.
NILSAL, in a press statement issued by its secretary Ch Nandakeshor, questioned whether the fertilizers distributed by the Agriculture department at a subsidized rate meet quality control standards, raising concerns about their effectiveness.
It  stated that the Agriculture department seems unable to regulate the market price of urea fertilizers, which are being sold at inflated rates, and as such all farmers want to purchase the subsidized fertilizers instead.
The association alleged that farmers are concerned about the effectiveness of the fertilizers, claiming that they have encountered urea fertilizers distributed by the Agriculture department with manufacturing dates listed as 2022. Furthermore, they asserted that some fertilizers which had deteriorated into stones were rebagged, and then distributed to farmers.
NILSAL urged the relevant authorities to test the nitrogen content of the subsidized urea fertilizers.
It also appealed to the Governor to ensure farmers receive quality fertilizers, especially considering the challenges they have faced since the crisis began in Manipur.
