IMPHAL, Jul 20 : The Rural United Club Organisation (RUCO) has urged the Central Government to withdraw its alleged plan to set up three designated camps for Kuki militant groups under the Suspension of Operation (SoO) pact in the Kangchup Chiru Reserved Forest areas, warning that they would launch an agitation if the demand isn't met.
Today, a sit in protest was staged at Phayeng Bazar by the locals of Meetei villages at Phayeng side and adjacent Naga villages such as Waphong, Bumol, Yairong, Haochong, Oktan, Khundong and Kangchup Chiru Village against the controversial SoO agreement signed between the Government and over two dozens Kuki militant groups.
Placards with descriptions "Don't extend SoO agreement", "Don't set up designated camps for SoO groups in reserved forest areas", "Don't set up SoO camps near highways and Meetei and Naga villages" etc were displayed during the protest demonstration .
Speaking to the media during the protest, RUCO president Rasantakumar alleged that officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Kuki militant groups under the SoO pact came to the Kangchup Chiru Reserved Forest areas recently for construction of three designated camps for the groups.
Urging the Government to withdraw the alleged plan to establish camps of SoO groups at Haraothel near the National Sports University at Koutruk, Naprong Chingjil along New Cachar Road, and near Kangchup Chiru Lamkhai, he demanded that no Kuki militant group camps be set up near Meitei and Naga villages. He warned that the people of Manipur would launch a strong agitation if the Government sets up the camps by disregarding their demand.
