IMPHAL, Jul 21: Manipur Tribal Indigenous Farmers Committee (MTIFC) has urged the Government to address its grievances including improving the methods and techniques of cultivation.
In a press release, MTIFC president RA Fernandez stated that farmers of both plain and hill areas have tried their best for many years to improve the standard of cultivation in order to raise the quality essential products which people consume and sell for their daily livelihood.
Expressing discontent with the Government for ignoring the grievances faced by farmers concerning the methods and techniques of cultivation, MTIFC has appealed the Government to introduce certain policies to manage their own "soil products" to improve the health and economy instead of importing chemicals and fertilizers from outside the State.
It also urged the Government to promote the products of hill farmers which are free of chemicals and fertilizers.
Additionally, it mounted pressure on the Government to provide proper market facilities such as transportation, IVR, Link road, water and cold storage etc.
Though many tribal/hill people do weaving, carpentry, mason, tailoring, etc, due to financial constraints they cannot maintain modern machines, it added.
Therefore, the MTIFC president has urged the Government to arrange various schemes to encourage them in order to procure required modern machine and equipment which will  help to speed up their work, improve the quality and have a good sale. Lastly, it asserted that an MoU was signed between the "previous committee" of MTIFC and Directorate Handloom & Handicraft and Manipur Tribal Development Co-operation (MTDC). Highlighting a lack of response in this regard, MTIFC has urged the concerned department to fulfil their promises while cautioning that democratic agitations will be initiated otherwise.
