IMPHAL, Jul 22 : Artefacts suspected to be from the World War II period, including a bomb, were recovered adjacent to a field in Langthabal Kunja Leikai under Singjamei police station today.
A hand grenade, spent bullet, two glass bottles, spade, vehicle parts, jack (device used for lifting heavy loads/vehicles), pick-axe etc were unearthed while workers were digging up the soil for a sewage project this morning.
After a video claiming to have discovered articles dating back to WWII went viral on social media, officials from Manipur State Archeology, INA War Museum cum Library Moirang, students and staff from Manipur University History Department and personnel from Singjamei police station arrived to assess the findings.
According to information received by The Sangai Express, Singjamei police station picked up the excavated hand grenade for public safety while the remaining artefacts were handed over to the officials concerned for further analysis.
According to Dr Laishram Sadhana, Curator, INA War Museum cum Library Moirang, the assessment was  carried out under the aegis of the Director of Art & Culture.
So far, they have not been able to assign the recovered items to a specific time period.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Yaiphaba Meetei Kangjam (40) from Langthabal Mantrikhong and author of Forgotten Voices of Japan, said that the workers unearthed the articles around 9 am today while digging for a sewage project.
Voicing suspicion that the items might belong to the WWII era, he said that during this time period, Langthabal was used by the British as a place to keep their vehicles.
Adding to this, other artefacts suspected to be from the WWII era were also unearthed from different parts of Langthabal in the past, he maintained.
