IDPs urge Govt to prioritize safety in resettlement plans

IMPHAL, Jul 22 : The locals of Tairenpokpi Chingtaba have praised the Government's initiative to relocate displaced people within a week but urged the Government to first deploy adequate security personnel in their village.
Today, the locals of Tairenpokpi visited  their village for the first time since fleeing and inspected the remains of their homes.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines, Ningthoujam Nanao, an Internally Displaced Person (IDP), said the Government had informed them that their resettlement to their original places would occur within a week.
Welcoming the initiative, he urged the Government to prioritize their safety by deploying adequate security personnel.
Saying that their village, with around 70 houses, is near Kuki villages, he added that they wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully even if they returned home.
He urged the Government to deploy security personnel on the hill near their village to ensure their safety and prevent any potential attacks.
Nanao stated that without security arrangements, they won't return, emphasizing that it's not just about being killed by Kukis, but prioritizing their overall safety.
He questioned who would take responsibility if they were attacked or kidnapped after resettlement, noting that many people have been killed in their own villages.
Nanao mentioned that the Imphal West DC assured them that they would continue to receive rations after resettlement, similar to what they received in relief camps.  
He stated that the financial aid of Rs 75,000 announced by the Government to repair houses per family is insufficient.take responsibility if they were attacked or kidnapped after resettlement, noting that many people have been killed at their own villages.
