Thoubal, July 24 : The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against Brutal Torture of Driver and Handyman by Manipur Police Personnel Mobile Team in Jiribam has demanded immediate action and accountability for the alleged assault of two individuals by police personnel.
The JAC warned of intense agitation if no positive is received from the authorities by July 29.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 1, 2025 near the Leingangpokpi  Police Outpost, where a truck driver and his handyman were allegedly assaulted and extorted by a mobile  police team of Leingangpokpi Police Outpost, while transporting scrapped materials.
According to the JAC, the victims were unfairly detained and their vehicles were tampered with false charges, despite having valid documentation.
Speaking to the media in a press conference, JAC convenor Mohd Helaluddin stated that the driver and handyman, working for Hafij Mateen and Sons of Lilong Bazar, who hold a valid business license issued by the Government of India, were not in possession of any illegal materials at the time of the incident.
Helaluddin alleged that police personnel at the Leingangpokpi Police Outpost assaulted the driver and the handyman over a demand of Rs 5 lakh. Upon contacting the owner, Hafij Mateem, a sum of Rs 1 lakh was handed over to a man identified as Bablu, who claimed to be a VDF personnel and member of the mobile police team. Upon receiving the money, the victims and their vehicle were finally released on Jul 2 at around 7 pm.
However, upon reaching their destination, the victims discovered that approximately 700 kilograms of brass worth Rs 7 lakh were missing.
In this regard, a memorandum has been submitted to the Governor of Manipur and the DGP by Hafij Mateen and Sons, however no positive response has been received as of yet. Therefore if the concerned authorities failed to take concrete steps regarding the matter and deliver justice by Jul 29, the JAC along with various CSOs and public will launch various forms of agitation, said Helaludin.
