IMPHAL, Jul 25: Women aren't the only reason for inability to get conceived after marriage. The fault may also lie with men, said Dr James Elangbam, Managing Director of Acme Fertility and Healthcare Centre.
Dr James said this during an event organised at the centre at Hiyang Hiren Lairak, Palace Compound to observe World IVF Day.
The World IVF Day is celebrated annually on July 25 to commemorate the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Speaking at the event, Dr James said the fault for a woman's inability to get conceived may lie with the male partner.
He explained that about 40% of infertility cases have been attributed to male factors, while female factors account for another 40%.
Some faults in both men and women account for 10 percent of infertility cases, and infertility in both men and women account for about 5-7 percent of infertility cases.
When married couples are not able to get conceived, the women are blamed most of the time, he said.
When visiting the clinic for medical advice and tests, most of the time, the male partners would stay away. Men usually think they aren't part of the problem, when in fact, they also may be the reason, Dr James said.
He also explained about IVF technology and said that the Imphal area has about 6 IVF centres.
Notably, In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology where fertilization occurs outside the body, in a laboratory, rather than in the woman's fallopian tubes.
The process involves retrieving eggs from the woman's ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory, and then transferring the resulting embryos into the woman's uterus.
Dr James said the IVF procedure at Acme Fertility and Healthcare Centre will improve significantly with the introduction of Artificial Intelligence starting 2026.
From 2026, the centre will use AI to select the most healthy embryo and enhance the success rate of the IVF, he said.
During the observance today, the centre encouraged and presented gifts to women who have successfully undergone the IVF procedure.
