IMPHAL, Jul 25: The Kuki Organization for Human Rights (KOHUR) has sought the Governor’s intervention to the effect that over 64 Kuki detainees who are Myanmar Nationals and currently lodged in Manipur Central Jail, Imphal  are transferred to temporary prisons in Kuki-dominated districts.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, KOHUR said that even though Indian Kuki undertrials were transferred from Manipur Central Jail, Imphal to temporary prisons located in Kuki-majority districts of the State such as Churachandpur, kangpokpi and Tengnoupal, over 64 Kuki detainees who are Myanmar nationals were excluded from the same process and they are still detained at Manipur Central Jail, Imphal.
Though they are Nationals of a neighbouring country, these individuals belong to the same ethnic community as the Kukis of Manipur, sharing language, culture, kinship ties and historical roots.
As such, they must be treated with equal regard and empathy, and transferred to the same Kuki-dominated districts for their own safety, dignity and well-being.
Saying that two among them have completed their full jail term but are still being held at Manipur Central Jail, Imphal, KOHUR appealed to the Governor to direct the officials concerned for immediate release of the two Kuki Myanmar National detainees who have already completed their sentences.
