Bravehearts remembered on Kargil Vijay Diwas

IMPHAL, Jul 26: Commemorating the valiant efforts and ultimate sacrifice of India's armed forces during the 1999 Kargil War, retd Lt Gen Dr Konsam Himalay Singh declared that all 1000 (approx) brave sons of Manipur who fought in the war are heroes.
He made the remark at the observance of Kargil Vijay Diwas organised by the All Bharatiya Purva Sainik Seva Parishad (ABPSSP), Manipur Prant and Rajya Sainik Board at Lamphelpat, Imphal.
It is worth noting that chief guest retd Lt Gen K Himalay Singh commanded a battalion in the Kargil War, while retd Lt Gen L Nishikanta Singh, who attended as the guest of honour, brought six Pakistani prisoners.
At the event, ABPSSP members, ex-servicemen and local youth paid floral tributes to the bravehearts of Manipur who fought in the rugged terrains of Kargil.
The Veer Naris (War Widows) and families of those who were critically wounded from Manipur were also honoured including a token of cash presentation. The event also featured patriotic songs and a moment of silence was observed in honour of the brave soldiers.
Addressing the gathering, Dr K Himalay Singh said the Kargil War was fought from May 6 to July 26, 1999 wherein the Indian Army completely defeated the Pakistani soldiers and expelled them from the Line of Control.
The courage and fearlessness of the Indian Army deserve high praise. Every soldier who fought at the Kargil battlefront is a hero, he maintained.
Saying that the Governor of Manipur is the chairman of Rajya Sainik Board, he expressed confidence that funding will soon be approved for renovation of the Board.
Efforts are underway to implement welfare schemes for ex-servicemen and increase MBBS seat reservation for their children, he added.
Meanwhile, retd Lt General L Nishikanta Singh reiterated that around 1000  soldiers from Manipur who served in the Assam Regiment, Naga Regiment, Artillery, and other formations and units fought against Pakistani armed forces at the Kargil battlefront.
He paid tribute to all armed forces personnel from Manipur who took part in the Kargil War while mentioning the bravehearts who gave the supreme sacrifice and those who were critically wounded.
The retd Lt Gen further added with pride that Manipur has the highest per capita number of officers serving in the Indian Armed Forces in the country.
Retd Colonel T Robindro Sharma, secretary, ABPSSP, Manipur also graced the event as the guest of honour.
ABPSSP Manipur along with Rajya Sainik Board is also planning to organize a similar function on Vijay Diwas (December 16) and honour the families of Manipur's bravehearts.
