THOUBAL, Jul 28 : The Forest Department arrested three individuals yesterday for illegal felling of trees at Lourok Konjin Ching which falls under Thongam Mondum Reserved Forest.
This incident comes in the midst of the Department's efforts to clamp down on unauthorized cutting of trees and excavation of hill earth.
Upon receiving information about a group of people illegally cutting down trees extensively at Thongam Mondum Reserved Forest yesterday, a team led by Range Officer Sundar Huidrom of Kakching Forest Range and Beat Officer Longjam Umananda of Wangoo Beat Office rushed to the spot under the guidance of Dr L Jeeceelee, DFO, Thoubal Forest Division.
Arriving at the location, the Forest Department officials discovered extensive illegal felling of trees in the reserved forest area. They seized the tools used and arrested three persons directly involved in the illegal activity.
According to reliable information from the Forest Department, legal action will be initiated against the three individuals under the Indian Forest Act. At a time when many tree plantation drives have been launched to combat climate change brought on by large scale deforestation, it is very unfortunate that trees were being extensively cut down from a reserved forest area, said Range Officer Sundar Huidrom.
