IMPHAL, Jul 29 : The Makhan Village Authority has asserted that Makhan Village was never a part of Saitu, countering claims made by the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC).
In response to WKZIC's April 11, 2025, statement that Makhan Village was a 'Saitu hamlet,' the Makhan Village Authority described the assertion as offensive.
The village authority argued that Saitu, as a village or boundary, is a recent administrative development without roots in ancient records or traditional geography.
The village authority further stated that they did not expect such a "lame fabrication" from an intellectual council or forum.
Saying that the Makhan and the Liangmai people have been an independent and sovereign people for ages, the village authority urged WKZIC to refrain from meddling in their history with 'ignorant and dull witted propaganda.'
It also said that the Makhan Liangmai Naga village's history is as ancient and vivid as the history of the Meitei civilization.
The deep-rooted history of Makhan Liangmai Naga village is not just preserved -its alive and the shared heritage of 'Zeliangrongpui' tribes (Zeme, Liangmai, Rongmei, Inpui) affirms and strengthens the legacy of Makhan as a cradle of civilisation, it said.
The village authority alleged that Kukis have no indigenous roots in Manipur, claiming their presence was shaped by colonial strategies and later legitimized through questionable means that bypassed democratic norms.
It further stated that the alleged attempts by Kukis to rewrite history and claim ancestral ties are not just misleading but a distortion.
What Kukis represent is not heritage but a construct born of British manipulation and post independence political manoeuvring, the village authority claimed.
The village authority further claimed that Kukis are living on payment of taxes and receipts to Makhan village, and alleged that this practice of paying land and occupation taxes is still prevalent in other Liangmai villages today.
The village authority also alleged that the transportation route currently used by the Kukis is ancestral land of the Liangmai Naga, adding that any road construction on the Liangmai Naga land under any name or facade will be futile.
The village authority stated that they remain steadfast in their commitment to live in peace and harmony, believing that such a peacekeeping stance is ensured and endorsed by the people living beside them.
