THOUBAL, Jul 29: A woman died post delivery at District Hospital Thoubal, triggering mobs to vandalise the hospital properties yesterday night.
The deceased woman has been identified as Khangembam ningol Maibam ongbi Samita Devi (32).
She was the wife of Maibam Ajit of Tekcham Mayai Leikai, Thoubal district. The husband is an Army man posted in Rajasthan.
Already a mother of a 3-year-old boy, Samita died after giving birth to a baby boy at the District Hospital.
The incident occurred at around 11 pm yesterday.
Ajit, the husband, said Samita was admitted to the District Hospital on July 27 and the next day at around 11 am, she gave birth to a baby through surgery.
Post-surgery at around 4 pm, Samita complained of severe pain.
The family informed doctors of the pain, but their appeal for a thorough check up was denied by the doctors and the nurses saying "it was normal for everyone to experience pain after surgery".
After Samita's condition worsened several hours later, the nurses administered painkiller.
Hours later at around 10 pm,  the family members noticed Samita's condition had worsened and "she was struggling to breathe."
After they complained, the doctors then brought medical oxygen, but she succumbed at around 11.10 pm, Ajit said.
During pregnancy, Samita underwent routine medical checkups and all her medical tests were found normal and without any problem. The doctors ignored "our complaints" and wasted more than 6 hours--from 4 pm to 10 pm. Had the doctors and the nurses performed their duties diligently, she would have survived, Ajit said.
"The doctors brought the oxygen in when the time had run out. They could have taken care of her and administered treatment early. She died because of the hospital's sheer negligence and ignorance of the doctors and nurses," Ajit said, urging relevant authorities to investigate and punish the erring doctors and the nurses.
The news of Samita's death triggered her families and localities of Tekcham  and Thoubal Athokpam (her parental home) to storm the District Hospital and vandalise a section of the ticket counter.
The family members and the people gathered accused the doctors and the staff of the hospital of negligence, and  the chaos that erupted disrupted normal service in the hospital for several hours.
Thoubal district police arrived later and controlled the mob.
In the morning at around 8 today, the body of the deceased was taken to JNIMS for mortuary.
Meanwhile, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) has been formed in connection with the case and it has submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner Hannah Kamei.
The JAC has urged the DC to conduct the postmortem of the body in presence of an Executive Magistrate and allow video recording of the process.
It urged the DC to conduct an enquiry and take appropriate action against the doctors responsible.
