IMPHAL, Jul 30: In what will be a major improvement in connectivity, a massive Rs 3600 crore project is in the pipeline to convert over 1000 roads in Imphal and several district headquarters into all-weather concrete roads.

The project will convert as many as 19 State Highways, 115 Major District Roads, 22 Other District Roads and 897 Inter Village Roads into reinforced concrete roads.

An official source in the Public Works Department (PWD) said the project will cover Imphal West, Imphal East, Highway South Division (Singjamei area) and district headquarters in the hills.
For the project, the PWD has released a list of 953 existing roads in Imphal West, Imphal East and Highway South Division to be converted into concrete roads.

The source in the PWD, meanwhile, said that the original width of the existing roads will remain the same after the upgradation.
The existing roads will be converted into concrete roads. There will be no widening of the roads, but all encroachments will be removed, said the source.
The district administrations will handle the eviction of encroachers/encroachment on the roads, added the source.
Further, all the relevant and departments concerned are working together to resolve issues that may be faced in implementing the project, said the source. One of the major concerns is the PHED's pipeline buried under the roads. To avoid bursting of the pipes and avoid any other hurdles related to the pipelines, the Public Health Engineering Department is being consulted to find viable solutions, said the source.
