IMPHAL, Jul 30 : Manipur prevailed 3-0 over defending champions West Bengal to seal the title of the Junior Boys’ National Football Championship for Dr BC Roy Trophy Tier I this evening at GDNU Sports Complex, Amritsar.
A good team work was on display yet again as two-time champions Manipur enjoyed a 2-0 first half lead before snatching the 3-0 win for the third title against the defending and 18-time champions West Bengal.
The two sides exchanged runs in search of the opener until Lourembam Naocha stunned the West Bengal custodian with a powerful shot from the edge of the box after connecting a well measured cross from the left flank by Kh Sultan.
Although West Bengal fought back with a series of runs, Manipur doubled the advantage as Ngayungmi Kashung rushed deep to tap home the ball as a defender and West Bengal goalkeeper Suva Barai fumbled while trying to collect Yumnam Sonamani’s header.
Manipur kept pressing for more goals while West Bengal players did their best to reduce the margin although their efforts went in vain as Manipur goalkeeper Kamei Jenthuipou Kamei and defenders were too good for them.
After the restart, West Bengal put in more effort to threaten the Manipur defence set up while the State player kept working to further extend their lead on multiple occasions. West Bengal also came too close to scoring a few times but their shots either missed narrowly or went straight into the gloves of the Manipuri custodian.
To much disappointment, West Bengal conceded another goal in the stoppage time as forward Amom Krish volleyed home the decisive goal two minutes into the stoppage time after Tonjam Stallone deftly worked his way towards the left flank before cutting the ball into the box to find Ngayungmi Kashung who further deliver the ball to the onrushing Krish.
