Red flag raised over trafficking

IMPHAL, Jul 30 : Social Welfare Secretary Robert Singh Kshetrimayum has emphasized that the evolving modus operandi of human trafficking poses significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.
Speaking at the "World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2025" observance, themed "Human Trafficking is Organized Crime-End the Exploitation" as chief guest, he stressed the need for collective efforts to prevent trafficking.
Robert highlighted that human trafficking, a long-standing major crime, has adapted over time, utilizing various techniques and technology to deceive people.
He noted that traffickers often appear innocent in public, targeting vulnerable populations, particularly women and children.
People aged 15-18 are most vulnerable, he said and called for enhanced collaboration among law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to combat this organized crime.
Despite its clandestine nature, human trafficking often occurs in plain sight, even in broad daylight, he said.
Noting that Manipur's situation may facilitate human trafficking, he emphasized the need for a collective effort from the Social Welfare Department, police, NGOs, youth clubs, Meira Paibi lups, and other stakeholders to combat the crime.
Social Welfare Director Anna Arambam, Chairperson of Manipur Commission for Protection Protection of Child  Rights Keisham Pradipkumar, Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Tiningpham Monsang and SP of CID (Crime Branch) Dr Rashini Yengkhom were the other dignitaries who attended the programme.
