IMPHAL, Jul 30: The Fast Special Court of RK Memcha has sentenced rape convict Md Abdul Rahaman (37) to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
Rahaman was earlier convicted by the same Court under Section 4 of the POCSO Act for sexually assaulting and wrongfully confining a minor girl on November 15, 2013 in a place under Moirang police station.
He was produced before the Court from the Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa for sentence hearing.
On November 15, 2013, Rahaman had forcibly taken the minor victim inside his pan shop and sexually assaulted her before abandoning her at a cemetery.
During the sentence hearing today, Special Public Prosecutor A Nilchandra submitted that the convict committed a heinous crime against the minor girl and did not show any human mercy.
The convict deserves maximum punishment, said the prosecutor, praying the Court for an exemplary punishment which would send a message to the society against perpetrators of crime against children.
The defense counsel of the convict, on the other hand, submitted that the convict is now married and has 4 children, and he has an aged father. The convict has been maintaining his family by doing labour works available from time to time, said the defense counsel praying the Court for awarding minimum punishment.
The Judge, after hearing the submissions, sentenced Rahaman to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
In case of default of payment of the fine amount, the convict has to undergo another one month of simple imprisonment, said the Judge.
The Judge also directed the State to provide a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the victim within a month.
