IMPHAL, Jul 30 : After two years of unrest, Manipur, the cradle of Indian football, is basking with the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, kicking off at the packed 35,000-capacity Khuman Lampak Stadium.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the Durand Cup event at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, Imphal East, marking the official commencement of the 134th edition of the tournament.
He was accompanied by the First Lady of Manipur.
The ceremony was preceded by vibrant cultural programmes featuring Pipe Band Display, Krav Maga demonstration, a lively Manipuri folk dance, a captivating performance of Kalaripayattu, among others, said a press release from Raj Bhavan and added that these performances added colour and festivity to the event.
The event signals a hopeful return to peace, bringing together communities through their shared love for the beautiful game.
The opening match between homegrown giants NEROCA FC and TRAU FC drew an electrified crowd, with fans, including excited school students, filling the stands minutes before kickoff.
The vibrant atmosphere was a testament to the State’s passion for football and its yearning for unity.
After two years of violence, hosting the Durand Cup in Imphal feels like a blessing,  said Rangita Yumnam, a local football enthusiast braving the summer heat to cheer for her team.
This tournament is a symbol of hope, showing that all communities can come together as one through sports. Another young fan echoed her sentiments: “We’re thrilled to witness the Durand Cup after everything we’ve been through. This event proves peace is slowly returning to Manipur. The sold-out match ended in an exhilarating 1-1 draw, leaving fans hopeful for more thrilling moments in the tournament. For a State that has produced sporting icons like Mirabai Chanu, Mary Kom, and Sarita Devi, the Durand Cup’s return is more than a sporting event—it’s a celebration of resilience and camaraderie. As one TRAU FC supporter put it, “A win for my team would be the icing on the cake, but this tournament itself is a victory for Manipur’s spirit.
