IPFM to go ahead with World Indigenous Day observation
IMPHAL, Jul 31 : The Indigenous People's Forum Manipur (IPFM) has declared that it is a State chapter of the North East Indigenous People's Forum, which has chapters in multiple North Eastern States, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
IPFM's statement comes on the heels of United Naga Council's "notice of stricture" restricting all members of the Naga community from participating in the World Indigenous Day celebration hosted by "unmandated organisation" IPFM.
In a press release, IPFM said that it represents all indigenous communities in Manipur and participates in celebrating World Indigenous Day on August 9, as declared by the United Nations.
The World Indigenous Day was celebrated in Meghalaya in 2023 and in Arunachal Pradesh in 2024. Manipur is scheduled to host the World Indigenous Day in 2025, as decided during the 2024 celebration in Arunachal Pradesh, it added.
The host for the World Indigenous Day 2026 will be determined on August 9, 2025, in Imphal, Manipur.
IPFM has invited all communities in Manipur who identify as indigenous to participate in the 2025 celebration.
