IMPHAL, Aug 20: Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba has urged the Government for a "two-pronged approach" to speed up construction work and complete the Jiribam-Imphal Railway project early.
He made this appeal in a special mention in the Parliament today.
Carrying out construction works at both ends--Imphal and Jiribam would speed up the project for an early completion. Otherwise, it would take another 2 or 3 years to complete the Jiribam-Imphal Railway Project, Leishemba said, explaining his appeal for a "two-pronged approach".
The MP sought the attention of the Parliament and the Government that the Jiribam-Imphal Railway line is the "only solution" to ensure free and unhindered flow of goods into Manipur.
Apart from frequent bandhs and blockades, and extortion activities, the Highways are also prone to landslides and mudslides during the rainy season which hamper movement of trucks carrying essential commodities into the State. A completed Jiribam-Imphal Railway line is the only solution to these issues, Leishemba said.
Leishemba mentioned that the Jiribam to Khongsang section of the railway line covering 55.36 Km has already been completed and commissioned in September 2022.
However, the remaining portions from Khongsang to Noney covering 18.25 Km and Noney to Imphal covering 37.02 Km are yet to be completed, he said.
As of now, the construction work is being carried out at Jiribam only. The Government may start construction work also at the Imphal end to speed up the progress and ensure early completion of the project. Otherwise, it may take another 2 or 3 more years to complete the project, Leishemba said.
