IMPHAL, Sep 9 : The Mother's Care Children Hospital & Research Centre has successfully cared for and treated one of the smallest surviving preterm babies in North East India.
The infant girl, weighing only 430 grams, was born as part of a set of triplets at just 7 months of gestation. Her siblings weighed 800 grams and 1000 grams.
The three infants were brought to Mother's Care for advanced neonatal care immediately after birth.
After months of specialized treatment, the 430-gram infant gained growth steadily to a healthy 1.3 kilogram baby.
Managing such extreme prematurity (preterm baby) requires labour intensive monitoring, advanced neonatal support systems such as incubators, strict asepsis and individualized feeding strategies. The hospital provided a safe developmental supportive care and stable environment for healthy growth of the baby, said Dr Sanasam Manimukta, a Consultant at the hospital in a statement.
"Every milestone achieved by this child represents the combined efforts of our doctors, nurses, caregivers and the family who never gave up hope, strengthened by the constant support and encouragement from our Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Dr Kh Ratankumar Singh and the Management Team of MCCHRC," said he said.
“We never imagined our little one, born so tiny, would make it this far. The doctors and nurses at Mother's Care gave us strength when we had none," the parents shared with emotion.
The healthy infant has now been discharged, said the hospital.
