IMPHAL, Sep 9 : The World Meetei Council (WMC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take decisive action to restore normalcy in Manipur and ensure his visit to the State is meaningful.
In the letter signed by its chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam, the Council said that they welcome the forthcoming visit of the Prime Minister, though much delayed.
Saying that the National Highways have remained obstructed by Chin Kuki armed groups, who continue to operate with 'impunity' despite the presence of Central forces for nearly two and a half years, the WMC said that the prevailing lawlessness has gravely impacted the people of Manipur, and its continuation raises serious concerns.
Instead of reining in these armed groups, the Ministry of Home Affairs has been engaged in repeated talks with them, thereby emboldening their activities, the Council said and added that such an appeasement has allowed Chin Kuki armed groups to openly challenge the authority of the State and even the Union Government, which is deeply unfortunate and unacceptable.
It also claimed that the Chin-Kuki armed groups are enjoying undue protection under the shadow of Central forces.
If the Government of India truly intends to resolve the Manipur crisis, it requires only a clear directive to the Army to rein in these armed groups, the WMC said and added that the problem in Manipur can then be addressed within a very short time if the Centre shows commitment .
Saying that that many Chin-Kuki groups trace their origins to cross-border migration from Myanmar and are pursuing the goal of establishing a so-called "Kukiland," the WMC added that the Prime Minister would be warmly received by the people of Manipur if, prior to his visit, he directs the Indian Army to take decisive action against the Chin-Kuki armed groups and ensures that the National Highways are fully secured, safe, and accessible to all communities.
