IMPHAL, Sep 26 : Khurai Pana Apunba Singlup and Coordinating Body, Khurai have submitted a proposal to Ajay Kumar Bhalla for a comprehensive riverbank strengthening and flood management project in Manipur valley in view of its vulnerability to frequent floods, riverbank erosion and unregulated encroachments.
Highlighting the escalating vulnerability of the valley population in the absence of adequate protective infrastructure and encroachment of natural floodplains, the memorandum stressed on the need to undertake the comprehensive project encompassing riverbank widening, retaining wall construction outside the stream and ecological restoration in order to secure long-term resilience.
According to the memorandum, the main objectives of this project include acquiring a strip of land measuring 40 feet in width along both banks of the rivers in the valley, thereby establishing buffer zones and preventing further encroachments and constructing reinforced cement concrete (RCC) and/or masonry retaining walls outside the stream and beyond existing street alignments, thereby strengthening riverbanks while preserving road infrastructure and the natural flow of rivers.
Other objectives include enhancing the flood-carrying capacity of rivers to mitigate the risk of seasonal inundation and safeguarding agricultural lands, human settlements, and essential infrastructure adjoining the rivers among others.
