IMPHAL, Sep 3: A recent order of the Registrar, Manipur University to use Hindi in official noting and drafting in all Sections and Departments of the university has courted sharp criticism from six student bodies.
While the order has now been "kept in abeyance until further order", it was an attempt to forcefully impose Hindi language and undermine local language, the use of which is promoted by the National Education Policy 2020, said the student bodies.
The student bodies include Manipuri Students' Federation, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur, Kangleipak Students' Association, Students Union of Kangleipak, and Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpanglup.
Issued on August 29, the order issued by Registrar, Professor M Premjit Singh, had asked all Sections and Departments of the university to use Hindi in official noting and drafting.
Quarterly inspections will be conducted to review the usage of Hindi in the respected Sections and Departments, the order had said.
The order was issued as per a decision taken in the meeting of the Official Language Implementation Co- mmittee held on August 8, the order had said.
Meanwhile, another order issued by the Registrar yesterday said the August 29 order has been kept in abeyance until further order due to "some procedural lapses".
The student bodies, meanwhile, said they are demanding complete revocation of the August 29 order.
By issuing the order and "keeping it abeyance", the Registrar seems to be testing ground for complete and forceful imposition of the Hindi language in the university, they said.
Imposing Hindi language will undermine regional languages, the promotion of which is encouraged by the NEP 2020. It will also undermine the Bhasha Samvardhan Samiti project which is aligned with the NEP and responsible for promotion of regional languages, said the student bodies.
The Registrar and the authorities concerned of the Manipur University must understand the sentiments of the people of the State, and completely revoke the August 29 order, they said.
