IMPHAL, Sep 3 : Achieving a landmark milestone, Acme Fertility & Healthcare Centre has become the first centre in North East India to successfully perform Laparoscopic Neo-vaginoplasty on in-patients diagnosed with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome.
According to a press release, the Centre has conducted three successful procedures since 2022.
MRKH syndrome is a rare congenital disorder (1 in 4500-5000 women) that affects the female reproductive tract, characterized by an underdeveloped or absent uterus and vagina, while the external genitalia appear normal. As a result, affected individuals do not menstruate and are unable to carry a pregnancy. However, ovarian function remains intact in most cases, allowing them to produce eggs suitable for fertilization through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), said the statement.
Laparoscopic Neo-vaginoplasty involves the creation of a new vaginal canal using minimally invasive techniques.
This advancement has offered new hope and empowerment to women living with this condition, said the release.
