IMPHAL, Sep 3 : Lok Sabha MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should apologise to the people of Manipur if he indeed visits the State as speculated.
He made the statement on the sideline of the 11th Heikru Heedongba Heeyang Tannaba (a ritualistic boat race) organised by the Ema Emoinu Thougal Thousil Kanglup, Kangleipak at Lamlai Salampat.
Speaking to the media, the MP continued that the Prime Minister must first apologise to the people of Manipur for not addressing the crisis which has persisted for over two years.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hasn't visited Manipur since ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023, despite repeated requests by the Opposition parties and civil society organisations (CSOs).
Dr Bimol described the crisis in Manipur as unprecedented and one of the worst, highlighting the massive displacement, and loss of lives.
He said that the people of Manipur must stick together at this crucial juncture.
Stating that the Meetei community which has a history spanning thousands of years is unable to move freely within its own State, he emphasised that the current situation in Manipur may be worse than the historical Chahi Taret Khuntakpa period.
He, meanwhile, called for the promotion of indigenous sports, stating that they form the foundation for modern sports.
A total of 24 panas including 12 women's panas participated in today's ritualistic boat race.
Congress MLAs Thokchom Lokeshwar Singh and Okram Surjakumar, along with other INC candidates who contested in the 2022 Assembly elections also attended the programme.
