IMPHAL, Sep 4 : Highlighting the emotional toll of prolonged displacement, Toijam Kananbala, the wife of an internally displaced person (IDP) killed by Kuki militants during the early stages of the crisis, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to resettle all IDPs during his visit to Manipur.
Kananbala's husband, Toijam Chandramani, a resident of Chura-chandpur's Thengra Leirak, was shot dead by Kuki militants on May 24, 2023 at Thamnapokpi Maning Canal in Bishnupur.
She has two sons, aged 13 and 10 and they are currently studying at KM Blooming School in Thoubal, residing at the school's boarding facility.
Speaking to The Sangai Express, Kananbala, an inmate at Kamakhya Pemton College relief camp at Hiyangthang, said that she learned about the PM's potential visit on September 13 through a newspaper article.
It would be a positive development if the PM visits Manipur, she said.
However, as an internally displaced person (IDP), she emphasized her desire for all IDPs to be resettled to their native villages during his visit.
Surviving on Govt assistance and rations has become tiresome, and earning a living by selling goods on the road is barely enough to support 'our families', she added.
Saying that many IDPs have died by suicides and it highlights the immense hardships and struggles of displacement, Kananbala appealed to the Prime Minister to facilitate resettlement.
