IMPHAL, Sep 4 : The Lei Ingkhol Kanba Lup has sought relief from the Government in connection with the expansion of Manipur High Court Complex which threatens to displace the villagers.
Notably, the Manipur Government had alloted 21 acres from Lei Ingkhol to the Manipur High Court Complex in 2005 "without proper consultation or consent from the villagers".
Speaking at a public meeting held today at Lei Ingkhol in Imphal East district, Maimom Anil, president, Lei Ingkhol Kanba Lup, said that attempts have been made to drive out the villagers since renovation work began at the Court Complex.
Notably, a community of socially ostracized people (due to specific diseases) were sequestered in the village and they have lived here for a long period with their children and grandchildren, according to Anil.
As the land allotment order was issued in 2005, the villagers have been living in fear and anxiety for 20 odd years.
Condemning such treatment toward the people, he urged the Government to acknowledge their suffering.
If the Government tries to forcefully evict the villagers from their land, they should be held accountable for all consequences, good or bad, he added.
Villagers present at the meeting also expressed grief at being constantly under threat of displacement which disrupts their lives and livelihood.
They have appealed the Government to ensure that Lei Ingkhol village remains intact and their land rights are protected.
Representatives of different CSOs also attended the public meeting.
