Meitei Christian Unity Day

IMPHAL, Jan 10: Meitei Christian Churches Council Manipur observed the 4th Meitei Christian Unity Day at Tangkhul Baptist Church, Kabo Leikai, Dewlahland today.
Wangjing-Tentha MLA Paonam Brojen, Mao MLA Losii Dikho, leaders of church, members of civil bodies and many Meitei Christians attended the event.
The observance commemorated Angom Porom Singh, who was believed to be the first in Manipur to follow Christianity.
Angom Porom Singh's grandson, Rev Angom Moses spoke at the event.
On the occasion, MLA Paonam Brojen said Angom Porom was a pioneer in spreading Christianity in Manipur. He said Christianity teaches people to spread love. People of different communities in Manipur may follow different faiths and religions, but this should not divide them, he added. Religions should not divide people but bring them together, he said. The MLA said the Nagas in Manipur can play a huge role in bringing about peace in Manipur, and opening the National Highways.
He said people of all communities should learn to forget and forgive to bring about reconciliation and peace.
Meitei Christian Churches Council Manipur president Rev Dr Thiyam Samuel also echoed that the people of different communities must come together and unite to foster peace and protect the State's integrity.
According to the census of 2011, Manipur has about 1.7 lakh Meitei Christians. There are about 400 Meitei Churches in Manipur. 249 of them were burnt or destroyed in the violent conflict which erupted on May 3, 2023, he said.
