‘Don't tax us’
IMPHAL, Jan 12 : The North East Vegetable Farmers, Workers and Traders Welfare Union Manipur has appealed against imposition of exorbitant taxes on transporters bringing vegetables and fruits into Manipur from outside the State.
Speaking to the media at Naharol Sintha Kanglup Panthoibi Shanglen at Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, Imphal East, Oinam Ranjita, secretary general pointed out that the State does not produce enough vegetables or fruits to feed its population.
As these circumstances necessitate the import of such items from beyond the State, the unlawful, high taxes imposed on vehicles loaded with vegetables and fruits along the highways is unfortunate.
They directly affect the vegetable sellers who depend on this trade for their daily bread, she said. Saying that the Union will continue to fight against such outrageous taxes and the challenges they bring, Ranjita also urged State CSOs to support vegetable farmers and traders. According to Oinam Ranjita, the Union was established on October 6, 2025 at Wahengbam Leikai, Imphal under the Indian Trust Act.
