IMPHAL, Jan 13 : Arambai Tenggol (AT) leader Korounganba Khuman has called for unity among the indigenous people of Manipur, while emphasising that illegal immigrants have been causing significant challenges in the State.
He made the statement during a programme christened "Nungshi Channaba Thouram" held at Taothong Khunou Khudeiband Kangjeibung in Imphal West, today.
Addressing the gathering, Korounganba urged all the indigenous people to exercise restraint, even if there are grievances among one another.
He stated that illegal immigrants have been sowing discord among the indigenous people.
These immigrants, he added, have also been attempting to claim a portion of the State's land as their own, further fuelling division. Without unity among the indigenous people, he warned, Manipur could face an uncertain future.
He pointed out that many indigenous communities worldwide have disappeared due to similar challenges.
Emphasizing the long-standing unity of Manipur's indigenous people, the AT leader said that the impact of unchecked illegal immigration on these ties must be recognized.
The programme organised by Shiroi Transport Cooperative Society was also attended by Lamshang AC MLA S Rajen, Officer in Charge of Lamshang  police station and transporters and members of clubs, organisations and meira paibi lups based in Lamshang, Uripok and Sekmai Constituencies.
