IMPHAL, Jan 18 : The Road Side Vendors Welfare Association, Manipur (RSVWAM) has stated that the number of street vendors has increased following the crisis in Manipur, due to restrictions on free movement along highways and a lack of earning opportunities.
RSVWAM observed its 28th foundation day at GM Hall today.
The programme began with a showcase of cultural dances.
Addressing the function, Kshetri Tama, president of RSVWAM, said that many men and women, including internally displaced persons (IDPs), have turned to street vending as the ongoing crisis has disrupted their businesses. She urged the Government to work towards ensuring free movement across the State so that people can begin earning again. She appealed to the Government to implement the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act, 2014 to ensure street vendors get social security. Director of Environment and Climate Change Dr Tourangbam Brajakumar, National Hawkers Federation working president Inyath Ali Baqri, and Manipur Keithel Phambi Apunba Lup president Oinam Bilasini also attended the programme.
