Waterbird census launched

IMPHAL, Jan 21 : Marking an important step in the conservation of water birds, the Asian Waterbird Census was officially launched today from Laisoi and Takmu areas of Bishnupur with systematic counting taking place in 50 identified spots.
Meanwhile, the inauguration of the Asian Waterbird Census was held at Loktak Lake. The event was inaugurated by Chief Conser- vator of Forest (CCF) Longjam Joykumar Singh.
With a special focus on migratory waterbirds, the census was launched in collaboration with Loktak Development Authority, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change and other wildlife conservationists groups.
On the first day, Forest officials, volunteers, and local participants covered fifty spots in the wetland areas of Loktak Lake and Tangjeng during the systematic counting process.
Further counting will be done in Central and Thoubal Forest Divisions covering another 35 spots.
During the inauguration programme, Longjam Joykumar Singh highlighted the ecological significance of Loktak Lake as a vital habitat for migratory waterbirds.
He emphasized the need for active participation of local communities in the conservation and protection of these birds.
He urged people to treat migratory waterbirds as yearly guests who visit the lake and bring hope, ecological balance, and prosperity.
The CCF also stressed that conservation efforts would be successful only with collective responsibility and awareness at the grassroot level.
The event concluded with a call for sustained conservation efforts to preserve Loktak Lake and its rich biodiversity for future generations.
Notably, the census aims to generate reliable data on waterbird populations and their habitats.
Amit Kaler, DCF, Park & Sanctuary; Waikhom Romabai, DFO, Bishnupur; Kumam Jugeshor Singh, vice president, Manipur Bird Club were also present at the event.
