Sporting tribute to a Legend Major (Late) Bob Khathing, MC, MBE Memorial Football Tournament begins in Senapati

The Major (Late) Bob Khathing, MC, MBE Memorial Football Tournament has begun at the Senapati Astro Turf Football Ground, Manipur, under the aegis of the Red Shield Division of Spear Corps.
The tournament is being organised to honour the life and legacy of Major (Late) Bob Khathing, MC, MBE—an eminent soldier, statesman and visionary leader whose contributions continue to inspire generations.
The tournament commenced with an opening ceremony today followed by the inaugural match between NGAIREI FC and SNGC, marking a spirited and competitive start to the event.
The football tournament will continue till January 29 and will follow a knockout format, ensuring high-intensity and closely contested encounters, said a statement issued by PIB Defence Wing.
A total of 14 local teams, representing communities from across the region, are participating enthusiastically, providing a vibrant platform to showcase footballing talent, discipline and sportsmanship, it said.
Beyond competition, the tournament reflects the unifying power of sport in bringing together youth from different backgrounds onto a common field, guided by shared rules, mutual respect and a collective spirit, it said.
By commemorating the legacy of Major (Late) Bob Khathing, MC, MBE, the Indian Army reaffirms its commitment to fostering understanding, strengthening civil–military relations and contributing to a peaceful and inclusive environment in the region, it added.
