IMPHAL, Jan 21: Lashing out at the BJP-led Central Government, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra has accused it of repealing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in a bid to offer more patronage to the corporate sector while violating the rights of poor people.
He made the statement during the Village Level Outreach & Mass Contact Programme on MGNREGA Bachao Sangram held at Hangul Idgah Ground, Sekmaijin Zilla Parishad organised by Wabagai Block Congress Committee under the theme "Restore MGNREGA, Restore Dignity, Restore Rights".
Aside from renaming the Act, the legal remedy previously available to workers to approach the courts if they are denied work has been removed in VB-G RAM G Act 2025. It is not just Mahatma Gandhi's name, but several core legal guarantees that have been removed, he claimed.
The Wangkhem AC MLA alleged that huge funding support under MGNREGA will be slashed and diverted to benefit the corporate sector. He also spoke about the 60:40 (Centre:State) funding for employment under VB G RAM G Act saying that poorer States will be unable to afford this.
Such an administration that patronizes the rich while ignoring the plight of the poor should be uprooted from the soil of this State, said K Meghachandra. A pamphlet listing four demands of the Congress and highlighting the Narendra Modi-led Government's alleged "attack" on guaranteed employment, Panchayati Raj etc was also distributed today.
Other dignitaries present at the programme include Sakir Ahamed, chairman, OBC Department, MPCC; S Jiten Singh, general secretary (organisation), MPCC; Md Wahidur Rahaman, general secretary (administration), MPCC; W Shyamjai, general secretary (protocol), MPCC; Sanjita Laishram, general secretary, Mahila Congress; Abdul Kalam, working president, Wabagai Block Congress Committee and Md Islamuddin, founder, Merciful English School among others.
